. Nursing informatics is explained as a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in the nursing practice (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). In clinical settings, nurses can quickly learn their patients status by electronically checking vital signs. A manual blood pressure reading, respiration, and heart rate counting all take a long time to complete and seem awkward for the patient. While the nurse is electronically monitoring these readings, they can assess their patients quicker and simultaneously compete with other nursing tasks. Administration relies on nursing informatics and technology to quickly access a patients account. This allows for everyone involved in the patients plan of care to readily access their information without having to hunt the nurse down to view the patients chart and make notes. Anywhere in the hospital, multiple parties can look at the patients file, such as pharmacy, lab, and the nurse. Education is driven by technology nowadays since it is safe to say almost everyone has access to a smartphone and/or a laptop. Education can be provided to anyone and anywhere. When COVID first began, many schools closed and students were forced to learn from home. They could be on the other side of the country and still have access to the course much like this class setting. It also allows PowerPoints and new healthcare policies to quickly be shared among faculty in the hospitals. Research is important in many professions, especially the health and science communities. Having the ability to search peer-reviewed articles on various scientific discoveries is amazing. On tv and in movies we often see things labeled as groundbreaking research that will change the fundamentals of knowledge of topics we already have an understanding on. Having technology available for physicians and nurses allows them to update and apply evidence-based practice in their own current practices. An example would be when gloves were first introduced during surgical procedures in 1893 after nurses and other surgical staff were tired of their hands being dry and irritated from all the chemical baths they had to sterilize them in prior to a procedure (Kean, 2020). Without communication methods through papers and articles, other medical professionals would have never known this existed and decreased the risk of postoperative infections from 17% to less than 2% (Kean, 2020).
2. I believe that nursing informatics is designed to create less stress on the nurse and other healthcare employees. Nurses play so many different roles throughout their shifts at work, and the technology is designed to help make their jobs flow a little easier. Nurses are responsible for knowing everything about their patients current condition, and past medical history. Vital signs are a frequent measurement taken with easily overlooked technology that is heavily relied on (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Electric blood pressure readings, thermometers, and pulse oximeters all quickly tell the nurse how their patient is doing in a matter of seconds. For this reason, I think this is the biggest significance of nursing informatics.
